FORGOTTEN MOVIE OF THE MONTH: BREAKIN 2- ELECTRIC BOOGALOO (1984)




Kiss my ass. I hear the sighs and teeth sucking already. "Breakin wasn't a REAL breakdance movie, it was Hollywood corny bullshit". Blow me. So what? Juice didnt have the best DJ work (GQ was weak as hell) and Fly By Night had corny rapping, but both movies are great. Breakin 2 was my shit. While I'll admit the first Breakin' was boring, the sequel Electric Boogaloo was corny and campy but in a very enjoyable nostaligic way. The storyline was better than the original, there were some beautiful women in there and Turbo aka Boogaloo Shrimp is the man! Care free jheri curl and the whole nine. Let's not forget a young Ice-T breaking records in half and wearing all leather and chains.

OK, it's no "OG" or "You Played Yourself", but Ice held it down in sheer entertainment. I saw it on TV One last week and it took me back because I haven't seen it since the 80's, so I had to cop the DVD. The music was dope too..."I Don't Wanna Come Down" (with Turbo dancing on the ceiling) and "Din Daa Daa". I dunno, maybe cause I grew up in the 80's this, Krush Groove, Tougher The Leather, Last Dragon, Hollywood Shuffle, Clue, Wildcats, Gung Ho, etc. all have sentimental nostalgic value to me. Turbo runnin out the hospital in his gown throwin pizza boxes at the construction crew...classic.

SLEPT ON ALBUM OF THE MONTH: M.O.P.-TO THE DEATH (1994)



As you may have heard on my July edition of Gator$-N-Fur$ (where I played "Blue Steel"), this is my favorite M.O.P. album. Very unpopular opionion. Many people would say Warriors or Firing Squad...shit, even First Family gets nods from some. But very few will go to the death for To The Death! The reason? M.O.P. and DJ Premier were a heaven made match, so obviously those 3 albums have that advantage. But something is to be said for the hard as death scent beats D.R. Period laid down for To The Death. Heavy metal styled, reverb heavy, shot gun snare mosh pit killer beats all the way through. Not many people had beats this hard back then, and damn sure not now. On their own, the beats of the later albums shine brighter, but these sparse To The Death beats only add to the no frills bash you in the head barbaric allure of the great M.O.P. The much hated (to my knowledge) original version of "Rugged Neva Smoove" is so hard you can envision a pitbull fight and 30 muthafuckas in Carhartts standing around watching. The aforementioned "Blue Steel" is the best cut on the album and is a brains-against-the-wall-fest, while the timeless FAG (Fake Ass Gangsta) applies so well to so many of these knucklehead kids.

With all these pretty boy punk kids running around harassing old ladies and little kids for gang initiation, they need to be chin checked by some ol school M.O.P. ass whuppins. Let's not forget "Guns-N-Roses", "Ring Ding", "Heistmasters" and the NYC anthem "How About Some Harcore?" Great for stress relief, bad moods and work out sessions (I'm a peaceful dude so I use it for the latter, haha). Big up Lil Fame (cool ass cat) and M.O.P. salute!
